Italy healthcare professions see surge in university admission applications

Italy is seeing a significant resurgence of interest in healthcare professions. National data indicates that over 74,000 candidates are expected for admission tests across 22 healthcare disciplines, representing a 16% increase compared to the previous year. Nursing applications specifically have seen a 15% rise, with approximately 21,500 candidates competing for 20,676 available spots.

This trend is viewed by UGL Salute as a vital signal for the future of the National Health Service (SSN), which has faced chronic professional shortages. Experts suggest the reversal from previous declines may be due to increased recruitment efforts by universities and regional bodies, as well as heightened media awareness regarding the necessity of healthcare workers.

Universities are expanding their offerings to meet this demand. The Università del Piemonte Orientale has opened admissions for master's degrees in nursing and midwifery, offering 127 total spots across its Novara and Biella campuses. Additionally, UniCamillus is conducting final admissions for its midwifery and dental hygiene programs for the 2026-2027 academic year.
