Healthcare reforms address vaccination barriers and aging population trends
In the Czech Republic, health insurance companies are moving to eliminate administrative barriers that have hindered vaccinations in hospitals. Ivan Dušek, director of the General Health Insurance Company (VZP), announced a plan for a mass import of reimbursement codes. This technical solution aims to automatically activate vaccination services for all relevant inpatient and outpatient facilities, removing the need for individual hospitals to negotiate complex contracts for low-value procedures.
In the United Kingdom, public health experts are highlighting a decline in healthy life expectancy despite increases in overall longevity. Data from the Office for National Statistics shows that while life expectancy has risen, the years spent in good health are decreasing. Professor Devi Sridhar notes that for UK men, healthy life expectancy is approximately 60.7 years, and 60.9 years for women. This trend poses significant challenges for social care systems and the sustainability of healthcare as populations age.
