Healthcare sector faces evolving cybersecurity threats

Healthcare organizations face an evolving landscape of cybersecurity threats that extend beyond traditional ransomware. Recent reports highlight several critical vulnerabilities affecting the sector.

The FBI has issued warnings regarding “OAuth consent phishing,” a technique where attackers use legitimate cloud provider permission screens to gain account access without needing passwords. This method allows malicious applications to access emails and sensitive data through authorization tokens, bypassing standard credential protections. Additionally, Health-ISAC has alerted organizations to voice phishing and domain impersonation tactics used by groups like ShinyHunters. These attackers impersonate internal IT help desks to pressure employees into approving multifactor authentication requests.

Data from Verizon’s 2025 Data Breach Investigations Report underscores the scale of the issue, noting a record 12,195 confirmed data breaches across 22,000 incidents. Vulnerability exploitation has emerged as a primary entry point, accounting for 20% of all data breaches—a 34% increase from the previous year. Experts emphasize the importance of maintaining supported technology stacks and applying timely patches to mitigate these growing risks.
