Healthcare services and emergency first aid for mothers and children in Serbia

In Serbia, pregnant women, postpartum mothers, and children have access to various free healthcare services provided through the Republic Fund for Health Insurance (RFZO). For pregnant women, this includes regular gynecological exams, ultrasounds, and specific laboratory tests such as double and triple tests. Additionally, pregnant women and mothers up to 12 months postpartum are entitled to free dental services in state health centers.

Children are also prioritized within the healthcare system, receiving free systematic pediatric exams and vaccinations according to the mandatory immunization calendar. Certain essential medications, such as specific antibiotics and syrups, are also covered by the RFZO for pediatric patients.

Regarding emergency situations, medical guidelines emphasize the importance of immediate first aid for choking. For children older than one year, the Red Cross recommends five back blows between the shoulder blades followed by five abdominal thrusts. For infants under one year, back blows and chest thrusts should be used instead of abdominal thrusts. It is advised not to hold a choking child upside down or attempt to remove objects blindly with fingers, as this may push the object deeper.
