Veracruz healthcare workers protest critical medical supply shortages

Healthcare workers and medical specialists in Veracruz, Mexico, are protesting severe shortages of essential medicines, surgical supplies, and basic materials across several high-specialty hospitals.

In Xalapa, staff from the Centro de Alta Especialidad (CAE) “Dr. Rafael Lucio” and the Hospital Regional “Dr. Luis F. Nachón” have marched to demand adequate supplies. Workers estimate that medicine availability at the Regional Hospital is currently only between 40 and 50 percent. Additionally, the CAE reports a backlog of approximately 1,100 surgeries dating back to December.

Pediatric oncologist Sergio Gómez has characterized the crisis as a state-wide issue, noting that shortages of antibiotics, sutures, and even gloves are affecting critical units, including the Centro Estatal de Cancerología (CECAN). Protesters have emphasized that their mobilization is strictly focused on improving patient care and working conditions, rejecting claims that the movement is politically motivated.
