Austria faces healthcare shortages and long surgical waiting lists

Healthcare providers and patient advocates in Austria are raising alarms regarding significant delays and shortages within the medical system.

In Styria, approximately 10,700 residents are currently waiting for cataract surgeries. At the LKH Uniklinikum Graz, waiting times can reach up to 45 weeks depending on urgency, while LKH Hochsteiermark reports waits of up to 44 weeks. SPÖ leader Max Lercher criticized the current management of these lists, noting that patients are increasingly forced to turn to private providers to secure faster appointments, creating a divide based on financial means.

In Lower Austria, patient advocate Michael Prunbauer highlighted critical supply bottlenecks, particularly regarding specialists such as dermatologists and psychiatrists. Prunbauer noted that patients often face waits of several months for appointments with general practitioners and specialists. Additionally, he emphasized the need for better climate control and cooling measures in hospitals and care centers to protect vulnerable populations from extreme heat.
