Healthcare staffing challenges reported across Canada

Healthcare systems in British Columbia and Manitoba are facing significant staffing pressures and leadership departures. In British Columbia, Dr. Kevin McLeod, an internal specialist at Lions Gate Hospital, expressed that he has reached a “breaking point” due to excessive workloads and unsafe patient volumes. He noted the difficulty of conducting complex specialist consultations in limited timeframes and highlighted the strain caused by transferring patients from facilities like Sechelt.

Additionally, neurologists at Penticton Regional Hospital may face reduced access to services following the resignation of three specialists. These departures follow new Interior Health requirements mandating on-call services across the entire health region, a move physicians argue increases workload without sufficient community support.

In Manitoba, Dr. José François has resigned as the provincial chief medical officer for Shared Health. In a resignation email, François cited the demands of the role and “challenges of the work environment” as primary reasons for his departure. His final day is scheduled for January 17, 2027, following a period that has seen several other senior leaders leave the provincial health authority.
