Healthcare staffing shortages reported in Zagreb Prison and Sanski Most

Healthcare services are facing significant disruptions in both Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina due to staffing shortages and financial instability.

In Zagreb, Croatia, the Union of State and Local Civil Servants and Employees (SDLSN) reported that three nurses resigned from the Zagreb Prison within a single month. The shortage has forced judicial police officers to assist with distributing medication to inmates. The union warned that this reliance on non-medical staff compromises healthcare accessibility and the overall security of the institution, noting that prisoners cannot seek alternative medical care.

In Sanski Most, Bosnia and Herzegovina, the local public pharmacy system is in crisis. Out of three public pharmacies, two have been closed and 11 workers have resigned. The remaining staff report working without pay or social security contributions. The institution, founded by the Government of the Una-Sansa Canton, faces debts to medicine suppliers exceeding one million KM and has operated without a formal Board of Directors for 12 years.
