Healthcare systems face bed shortages and financial crises in Argentina and Colombia

Healthcare systems in Mar del Plata, Argentina, and San Andrés, Colombia, are facing critical infrastructure and financial challenges.

In Mar del Plata, the Federation of Clinics, Sanatoriums, Hospitals, and Other Establishments of the Province of Buenos Aires (Fecliba) has warned of a significant loss of inpatient beds despite a growing population and increasing medical complexity. Key institutions such as Sanatorio Central, Clínica Libertad, Clínica Modelo, and Hospital Español have ceased operations. Financial difficulties are being exacerbated by payment delays and outdated fee structures from providers like IOMA and PAMI.

In San Andrés, the Clarence Lynd Newball Hospital is struggling to serve over 63,000 permanent residents and a high volume of tourists with limited resources. The facility has only 94 beds, including just six adult intensive care beds. Issues include chronic shortages of supplies, unpaid staff, and the recent cancellation of an international event due to insufficient medical guarantees. In response, Colombian authorities have decided to involve the Comptroller General and the Attorney General to review resource management and hospital funding.
