Healthcare systems in Saskatchewan and Manitoba face service disruptions

Healthcare systems in Western Canada are facing significant operational challenges. In Saskatchewan, the Saskatchewan Health Authority reported service disruptions across five health facilities. Specific impacts include temporary emergency room disruptions at the Wakaw Primary Health Care Centre and the Preeceville and District Health Centre. Additionally, long-term outages persist at the Kamsack Hospital, the Wolseley Memorial Integrated Care Centre, and the Wilkie and District Health Complex.

In Manitoba, the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority has activated surge protocols to manage exceptionally high demand. The authority has requested that three long-term care facilities—Riverview Health Centre, Deer Lodge Centre, and Misericordia Health Centre—create space for hospital patients who no longer require acute care but cannot yet transition to other settings. Manitoba Health Minister Uzoma Asagwara noted that the system is experiencing unprecedented service levels for the summer months. The Manitoba Nurses Union has expressed concerns regarding the lack of a long-term plan following these temporary measures.
