Mexico healthcare workers protest medical supply shortages

Healthcare workers across various Mexican regions are staging protests to demand essential medical supplies, adequate staffing, and improved labor conditions. In Tamaulipas, specifically in Reynosa and Río Bravo, personnel from IMSS-Bienestar hospitals have blocked major thoroughfares to protest the lack of medicines, uniforms, and the absence of mandatory occupational health breaks.

The Sindicato Nacional Independiente de Trabajadores de la Salud (SINAITSA) has stated that dialogue with authorities has reached its limit, demanding signed agreements to guarantee pending payments and benefits. Political leaders in Tamaulipas have criticized the current administration for failing to address these systemic shortages.

In Veracruz, staff at the Hospital Regional de Veracruz report a critical shortage of basic materials, including sutures, gauze, analgesics, and antibiotics, which they claim puts over 200 hospitalized patients at risk. Similarly, at the Centro Médico Nacional Siglo XXI in Mexico City, nursing staff have demonstrated to highlight shortages of functional equipment and the strain of high patient-to-nurse ratios.
