Healthdirect service expanded to ease public hospital pressure
After facing long waits in public hospital emergency departments, the Warby family utilized the expanded Healthdirect referral service to manage their daughter Imogen's medical needs.
Imogen, who was diagnosed with quadriplegic cerebral palsy at six months old, has complex medical requirements. Her parents, Emalea and Luke Warby, reported that the public hospital system in the Hunter region is heavily stretched due to insufficient staff and resources.
To alleviate pressure on emergency departments, the Minns government has expanded Healthdirect, a 24/7 telephone service staffed by registered nurses. The service can refer patients to VirtualKids, a virtual pediatric service. This service allowed the Warbys to receive specialist nursing and pediatrician guidance via video chat, enabling them to manage Imogen's recent gastrointestinal illness at home rather than seeking emergency hospital care.
