Healthy nutrition helps prevent sarcopenia in older adults
Sarcopenia, the progressive loss of muscle mass, strength, and physical performance, is a significant health challenge for the elderly. While it is a natural part of the aging process, several factors can accelerate its onset, including physical inactivity, sedentary lifestyles, chronic diseases, persistent inflammation, and poor-quality nutrition.
Paulina Elizabeth Ochoa Moreno, a nutrition professor at the Universidad Autónoma de Guadalajara, notes that sarcopenia is a leading cause of disability, dependency, falls, fractures, and hospitalizations in older populations. Aging also introduces physiological changes that can hinder proper nutrition, such as decreased appetite, altered senses of taste and smell, and difficulties with chewing or swallowing.
A balanced diet is a primary strategy for preserving muscle mass. Proteins are highlighted as one of the most critical nutrients for maintaining muscle health during the aging process.
