Hearing aid users receive expert advice for safe physical activity

Eberhard Schmidt, President of the Bundesinnung der Hörakustiker (biha), provides guidance on using hearing aids during physical activity. To prevent sweat from damaging sensitive electronics, he recommends using headbands, hats, or caps to absorb moisture. Headbands also serve to keep the device securely in place during fast-paced activities like jogging or riding.

While hearing aids are suitable for most sports, including team sports where communication is vital, certain activities pose risks. Schmidt advises leaving devices at home during combat sports to avoid injury from physical impact and suggests caution during water sports, as excessive moisture can harm the electronics despite splash resistance.

For those using Bluetooth to stream music or podcasts while exercising, Schmidt notes that streaming consumes more battery power and recommends ensuring devices are fully charged. Additionally, users exercising outdoors should adjust settings to remain aware of environmental sounds like car noises or bicycle bells.
