Hearing loss and lifestyle factors linked to dementia prevention
Research indicates that addressing modifiable risk factors could prevent or delay nearly 45% of dementia cases, including Alzheimer's disease. One significant factor is hearing loss; while the American ACHIEVE trial did not show a universal benefit for all participants, it did demonstrate that hearing aids and support slowed cognitive decline by 48% in a high-risk subgroup.
To address these risks, the University of Montreal has developed Santé Cerveau PRO, an online program designed for adults aged 50 and older. Coordinated by Professor Sylvie Belleville and involving approximately 150 Canadian researchers, the non-commercial tool targets seven modifiable risk factors: physical activity, nutrition, cognitive engagement, sleep quality, social and psychological health, vascular health, and vision and hearing. The program is currently undergoing real-world testing to evaluate its large-scale effectiveness.
