Hearing loss linked to cognitive decline in recent studies
Recent research suggests that addressing hearing loss may play a significant role in combating cognitive decline. Studies indicate that preventing hearing loss is a critical factor for brain health, with a 2020 report suggesting its impact may be more significant than the combined effects of smoking and physical activity.
Researchers utilized the “Repeatable Battery for the Assessment of Neuropsychological Status for Hearing-impaired individuals” (RBANS-H) to measure cognitive abilities in individuals with severe hearing loss. The study compared cognitive performance at the time of hearing impairment against results obtained one year after subjects received cochlear implants, which provide direct signals to the auditory nerve.
