Hearing loss risk highlighted: early tinnitus sign and prevention advice

Audiology experts warn that damage to the inner ear's hair cells is permanent and can result from everyday noise sources such as loud concerts, high‑volume headphones, fitness classes, power tools and other routine activities. Valerie Pavlovich Ruff of the Cleveland Clinic and Jamie Bogle of Mayo Clinic note that even teenagers and children are now showing early signs of hearing loss.

The most common early warning sign is tinnitus – a ringing or buzzing in the ears after exposure to loud sound. Experts advise prompt hearing tests if tinnitus or other symptoms appear. Protection measures include using high‑fidelity earplugs that reduce volume without distorting music, limiting exposure duration, and lowering volume levels on personal audio devices.

Because the ear’s hair cells do not regenerate, preventing excessive noise exposure is essential to preserve hearing for life.
