Heart attack prevention and symptom recognition

Cardiovascular diseases remain a leading cause of death in Germany, with over 300,000 people suffering heart attacks annually. Medical experts from the Deutsche Herzstiftung, the Bundesverband Niedergelassener Kardiologen, and the ABDA emphasize the importance of identifying and managing key risk factors.

Critical “silent killers” include high blood pressure, elevated LDL cholesterol, and diabetes, which can damage the heart and blood vessels for years without obvious symptoms. Other significant lifestyle factors include smoking, obesity, physical inactivity, poor nutrition, and lack of sleep. Experts suggest that even small changes, such as quitting smoking—which can halve heart attack risk within two years—or increasing physical activity, can make a difference.

Recognizing symptoms is vital for survival, as three-quarters of heart attack deaths occur at home without medical intervention. Common symptoms include intense pain behind the breastbone, pain radiating to the left arm, shoulder, or upper abdomen, feelings of dread, weakness, and a pale-grey complexion. Notably, women often experience different symptoms than men, which can lead to delayed recognition and higher mortality rates among women.
