Heart Attack Risks and Cardiac Arrest Timeline Emphasize Early Intervention
Cardiologists warn that heart attacks can affect people who consider themselves healthy. Dr. Jeremy London identifies eight modifiable risk factors: high cholesterol, smoking, stress, diabetes, high blood pressure, large waist circumference, unhealthy diet, lack of physical activity, poor sleep and excessive alcohol consumption. Lifestyle changes such as quitting smoking, improving diet, exercising regularly, maintaining a healthy weight, monitoring blood pressure and cholesterol, limiting alcohol and ensuring good sleep can markedly lower the chance of a heart attack.
A cardiac arrest, distinct from a heart attack, occurs when the heart stops pumping blood due to an electrical malfunction. The first four minutes after collapse are critical because the brain begins to suffer irreversible damage within minutes of oxygen loss. Immediate cardiopulmonary resuscitation and access to an automated external defibrillator (AED) are the only interventions that can restore circulation and improve survival chances. Understanding the rapid physiological decline underscores the importance of rapid response and public access to defibrillators.
