Heart disease and diabetes lead mortality in Veracruz and Quintana Roo
Preliminary data from the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI) indicates that heart disease, diabetes mellitus, and malignant tumors were the leading causes of death in Veracruz and Quintana Roo during the first quarter of 2026.
In Veracruz, 15,583 deaths were recorded between January and March. Heart disease led with 4,216 deaths, followed by diabetes mellitus with 2,844, and malignant tumors with 1,758. Veracruz reported the second-highest crude death rate in Mexico at 193.2 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants, trailing only Mexico City.
In Quintana Roo, 703 deaths were attributed to these three chronic conditions out of a total of 6,110 deaths during the same period. While Quintana Roo recorded the lowest crude mortality rate in the country at 114.5 per 100,000 inhabitants, its adjusted rate considering age structure was 174.2, which is higher than the national average of 158.3.
