Heart Failure Study Uncovers New Treatment Targets and Ongoing Medication Adherence Crisis
Researchers from the University of Utah Health and the University of California San Diego have produced the most detailed single‑cell gene‑regulation map of human heart failure to date. Analyzing heart tissue from 36 individuals and more than 750,000 cells, they identified twelve major cardiac cell types and documented shifts in cell composition—fewer muscle cells and more immune cells and fibroblasts—in failing hearts. The atlas highlights numerous regulatory pathways that could serve as novel therapeutic targets for future drug development.
A systematic review of 20 studies on heart‑failure medication use, led by Kashan University of Medical Sciences, found that more than half of patients worldwide do not adhere consistently to prescribed therapies. Non‑adherence is linked to older age, low education and income, limited health literacy, rural residence, obesity, multiple comorbidities and gender‑specific factors. The review stresses the urgent need for targeted interventions to improve adherence and reduce high rates of rehospitalisation and mortality associated with heart failure.
