Heart Scarring Research Yields New Imaging Technique and Anti‑Inflammatory Therapy

Researchers at George Washington University have created an advanced imaging system that simultaneously maps heart structure and electrical activity. Using six high‑speed cameras, fluorescent dyes and 3‑D reconstruction, the system visualises scar tissue and its surrounding border zones in rat hearts, showing that abnormal electrical signals often originate near scar edges and can trigger dangerous arrhythmias.

Separately, scientists at Uppsala University have developed a biological drug made from bone‑marrow‑derived exosomes. Delivered directly into the damaged coronary artery during balloon angioplasty, the treatment reduces inflammation‑driven scarring and preserves heart function in animal models. The researchers plan to begin clinical trials later this year, aiming to lower the risk of heart failure and cardiac death after heart attacks.
