Heart valve disease: Warning signs and symptoms
Medical experts from the Institute of Cardiology at Bach Mai Hospital are warning that symptoms often dismissed as fatigue or aging may actually indicate heart valve disease. Heart valve issues, which include stenosis (narrowing), regurgitation (leaking), or a combination of both, can force the heart to work harder, potentially leading to structural changes and heart failure.
Key warning signs include shortness of breath during physical activity, persistent fatigue, and the need to sleep with the head elevated. Advanced stages may present as leg swelling, palpitations, chest pain, or fainting.
Additionally, heart palpitations or a racing heart at night can be triggered by lifestyle factors such as stress, caffeine consumption, dehydration, or alcohol. However, if palpitations are accompanied by chest pain, dizziness, or fainting, immediate medical evaluation is necessary.
