Heartburn and acid reflux management through lifestyle adjustments

Heartburn and acid reflux occur when stomach acid travels upward into the esophagus, often caused by a failure in the muscle valve at the lower end of the food pipe. Common triggers include heavy meals, spicy foods, and lying down immediately after eating.

To manage acute symptoms, gastroenterologist Dr. Joseph Salhab suggests three lifestyle adjustments: chewing sugar-free gum to increase saliva production and aid swallowing, practicing diaphragmatic breathing to support the esophageal barrier, and taking a light walk to encourage digestion. Vigorous exercise should be avoided immediately after meals.

While these methods can alleviate occasional discomfort, they are not substitutes for medical treatment. Individuals should seek professional medical evaluation if symptoms become frequent, severe, or are accompanied by difficulty swallowing, vomiting, unintended weight loss, or concerning chest pain.
