Heat-Driven Power Outages Strike Alicante and Havana

In Alicante, Spain, soaring summer temperatures have led to a series of temporary electricity cuts across the city and surrounding neighborhoods. Residents reported up to seven simultaneous supply incidents within a week, affecting districts such as San Blas, Albufereta and Playa de San Juan. Complaints also mention degraded mobile and internet coverage as the local grid and fiber networks become saturated.

In Havana, Cuba, the Ministry of Energy and Mines has mobilised electricians to replace damaged transformers and rehabilitate distribution networks after a wave of outages linked to the heat. The state utility EELH averages about 25 transformer failures per day, with peak days exceeding 60, extending interruption times. Workers from across the country are operating around the clock to produce new units despite U.S. sanctions that restrict fuel and spare‑part imports.
