Heat Exhaustion Explained: Why the Body Fatigues in High Temperatures

When ambient temperatures rise, the human body must work harder to keep its core temperature within the normal range of about 36.5 °C to 37.5 °C. It does this by increasing blood flow to the skin, accelerating the heartbeat and dilating blood vessels, and producing sweat to dissipate heat. The extra effort raises energy consumption, which can cause fatigue, palpitations and shortness of breath.

If water and mineral loss become excessive, body temperature can climb to 38 °C‑40 °C. Symptoms may include intense tiredness, headaches, visual disturbances, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, rapid breathing and profuse sweating. Elderly people, young children and athletes are especially at risk.

Health authorities advise staying in cool, dry, well‑ventilated places, limiting strenuous activity to early morning or late evening, drinking at least two litres of moderate‑temperature water (or fruit juice or rehydration solutions), applying ice packs to the head, neck, armpits and groin, and seeking medical attention if symptoms worsen.
