Cardiovascular health: Research links inflammation and lifestyle to blood pressure

Recent medical insights and research highlight various factors influencing cardiovascular health and hypertension management. Scientists have identified inflammation resolution pathways as a potential third driver of high blood pressure, alongside the sympathetic nervous system and the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system. An experimental compound, 17b, has shown promise in reducing blood pressure and repairing vascular damage in mice.

Dietary choices play a critical role in blood pressure regulation. Reducing salt intake, particularly from processed foods, and increasing potassium-rich foods like fruits and vegetables can help. Beetroot juice, rich in natural nitrates, may assist in relaxing blood vessels, though it is not a replacement for medical therapy. Conversely, excessive pomegranate consumption may pose risks for individuals on certain medications or those with low blood pressure.

Lifestyle factors such as physical activity remain essential. While the ‘10,000 steps’ rule is a common benchmark, regular movement is more important than hitting a specific number. Both walking and running are effective for lowering blood pressure; walking for 20 to 40 minutes several times a week can improve heart health and reduce stress. Additionally, cardiothoracic surgeon Dr. Jeremy London warns against smoking and ultra-processed foods to maintain long-term heart health.
