Heat poses severe risk for people with ichthyosis
High temperatures can be life‑threatening for individuals suffering from ichthyosis, a rare genetic skin disorder that prevents normal sweating. Without the ability to release heat through perspiration, patients are vulnerable to heat‑stroke and hyperthermia, especially during summer heat waves.
Dermatologists point out that in Spain there are roughly 300 known sufferers. Medical experts advise constant hydration, the use of non‑occlusive creams, and strict avoidance of direct sun exposure. Many patients, such as 36‑year‑old physics teacher Alberto Gómez, protect themselves with UV‑blocking umbrellas and avoid headwear that traps heat.
No specific cure exists; management focuses on skin care, moisture control, and environmental precautions to prevent fatal heat incidents.
