Heat protection measures implemented for construction workers
Extreme heat and UV radiation pose significant health risks and increase the likelihood of accidents for outdoor construction workers. To mitigate these dangers, the BG BAU (Berufsgenossenschaft der Bauwirtschaft) recommends that companies implement heat action plans, checklists, and systematic hazard assessments.
Effective protection strategies include technical measures such as weather protection tents, sun sails, and air-conditioned break areas. Organizational adjustments, such as modified working hours, additional breaks, and strict hydration rules, are also essential. Personal protective equipment, including UV-protective clothing, sunglasses, and cooling vests, should supplement these measures but not replace technical or organizational solutions.
Individual companies are adopting practical responses to rising temperatures. For example, the metalworking specialist Ferrotec GmbH implemented a ‘heat mode’ where employees start work earlier at 6:00 AM to finish an hour earlier, avoiding the hottest parts of the day. Employers are also encouraged to train staff to recognize symptoms of heat exhaustion, such as dizziness, nausea, and confusion.
