Heat pump adoption faces noise regulation and installation myths
Heat pump adoption in Germany faces both technical misconceptions and regulatory challenges regarding noise levels. A survey conducted as part of the ‘Wärmepumpe? Kann ich!’ project involving 1,460 owners found that 94.9 percent of users are satisfied or very satisfied with their decision to install a heat pump.
Despite high satisfaction, myths persist regarding installation requirements. For instance, many homeowners believe older buildings require complete renovation before a heat pump can be installed, though experts suggest over 90 percent of existing buildings are fundamentally suitable.
Additionally, noise emissions from air-water heat pumps can lead to legal disputes between neighbors. To avoid litigation, devices must adhere to noise limits established by the Federal Immission Control Act (TA Lärm). These limits vary by zone: for example, in purely residential areas, the permitted levels are 50 decibels during the day and 35 decibels at night.
