Germany heating transition: Heat pump projects and nationwide awareness days
Germany is advancing its heating transition through localized infrastructure projects and nationwide public engagement. In Stuttgart, Stadtwerke Stuttgart has commissioned a second energy module in Weilimdorf, utilizing air-to-water heat pump cascades to provide renewable heating for 115 apartments in multi-family buildings.
To support the transition from fossil fuels, a nationwide “Tag des offenen Heizungskellers” (Open Boiler Room Day) is scheduled for November 21, 2026. Organized by various environmental and energy associations, including Greenpeace Deutschland and BUND, the initiative invites homeowners to showcase renewable heating systems, such as heat pumps and solar technology, to provide practical insights into costs, technical implementation, and residential comfort.
On a policy level, municipal heat planning is entering a critical implementation phase. While many cities have completed their initial plans to meet greenhouse gas neutrality goals by 2045, a survey by the Kompetenzzentrum Kommunale Wärmewende indicates that 83% of participating municipalities see a need for improved communication to increase public acceptance of these changes.
