Heating efficiency: Maintenance and usage tips for autumn

As the heating season approaches, experts are providing guidance on maintaining heating systems and optimizing energy consumption.

For heat pump users, the Verbraucherzentrale NRW warns that autumn debris such as leaves, twigs, and spiderwebs can accumulate on ventilation grilles, potentially reducing device performance. Maintenance should be performed while the unit is not in operation. Cleaning the exterior should involve only a sponge and solvent-free soap; the use of high-pressure cleaners or harsh detergents is discouraged to avoid damaging the casing. Internal components should only be serviced by professionals.

Regarding thermostat usage, energy advisors clarify that the numbers 1 through 5 on a thermostat represent target temperatures rather than heating speed. Setting a thermostat to level 5 does not heat a room faster but can significantly increase energy costs.

General energy-saving tips include: - Maintaining a minimum temperature of 16°C to prevent mold. - Keeping a 30 cm distance between radiators and furniture or curtains to avoid blocking heat. - Using 'shock ventilation' (opening windows for 5 minutes) rather than leaving them tilted. - Ensuring all radiators in a connected room group are set to the same temperature to avoid inefficient compensation by a single unit.
