Heat pump mechanics and compressor failure indicators

Heat pumps function by moving existing heat from one location to another using a refrigeration cycle, rather than generating heat through combustion or electric resistance. In winter, the system extracts heat from outdoor air—even in temperatures below freezing—and transfers it indoors. In summer, the process reverses to provide cooling.

The compressor is a critical component that increases the temperature and pressure of the refrigerant to facilitate this heat transfer. Because the compressor is essential to the system's ability to move heat, its failure can lead to significant issues.

Warning signs of a failing compressor include lukewarm air from vents, the unit running constantly without reaching the thermostat setting, unusual grinding or clunking noises during startup, and tripped circuit breakers.
