Heat pumps and convectors offer efficient cooling alternatives
Innovative heating and cooling solutions are emerging as alternatives to traditional air conditioning. In a renovated building in Zurich, a dual-purpose system uses convectors to manage indoor temperatures. During winter, the system provides heat, while in summer, approximately 20 degree Celsius water flows through aluminum lamellas to cool the air via small fans. This method avoids condensation issues by maintaining relatively warm water temperatures. The building's energy-efficient renovation, including improved facades and windows, has reduced district heating consumption by two-thirds.
Beyond individual building examples, heat pumps are being highlighted as a versatile technology for residential cooling. While most heat pumps can technically provide cooling, ground-source or groundwater heat pumps are noted for their high energy efficiency due to stable underground temperatures. Experts suggest that for effective cooling, systems such as underfloor, wall, or ceiling heating are preferable over traditional radiators, which would require excessively low temperatures to be effective, potentially leading to moisture issues.
