Heat pumps see rising U.S. sales amid demand for efficiency
Electric heat pumps have surpassed traditional central air conditioners in annual sales in the United States, driven by a growing demand for efficient, all-electric heating and cooling systems.
While heat pumps are highly efficient by moving heat rather than generating it, their performance depends heavily on proper installation and configuration. In extreme cold, systems may rely on auxiliary electric resistance heat, which is significantly less efficient and consumes three to four times more electricity than the heat pump mode. Proper thermostat settings and commissioning are essential to prevent excessive energy consumption.
In residential applications, heat pump water heaters are also being utilized to reduce electricity use and lower utility bills. These hybrid units can be particularly beneficial for homeowners with solar arrays or backup power systems, as they require much less wattage to operate in heat pump mode compared to standard electric resistance water heaters, making them easier to run during power outages.
