Heat safety guidance issued for pets and infants
As temperatures rise, experts are providing guidance on protecting vulnerable groups from heat-related issues, specifically pets and infants.
In Belém, the Municipal Secretariat for Animal Protection and Defense (Sepda) has issued recommendations for pet owners to prevent dehydration, exhaustion, and hyperthermia. Because dogs and cats have limited mechanisms for regulating body temperature, owners are advised to ensure constant access to fresh water, provide ventilated environments, and adjust walking schedules to avoid peak heat.
For infants, parents are advised to manage thermal stress by using lightweight cotton clothing and maintaining well-ventilated rooms. While babies under six months should rely on breast milk for hydration, older infants require consistent water intake. Experts warn against covering strollers with cloths, which can create a greenhouse effect, and recommend avoiding outdoor activities between 10:00 and 16:00.
