German health agencies warn of heat risks and blue‑algae blooms

Public health offices across Germany have issued a series of warnings as summer temperatures soar. The Rhein‑Sieg‑Kreis health department cautions residents, especially children, seniors and people with hypertension, to avoid prolonged sun exposure and to use protective clothing and high‑SPF sunscreen. Heart specialist Maik Henschke advises hypertensive patients to stay cool, hydrate and limit outdoor activity when temperatures exceed 30 °C.

The German Weather Service’s heat‑alert map now highlights ‘strong heat’ and ‘extreme heat’ levels, while the WATCH OUT UV‑index project places electronic UV‑index boards in Selb’s Rosenthal‑Park and at the Langer Teich lakeside, offering real‑time UV readings via QR codes.

Concurrent with the heat wave, several reservoirs report rapid growth of cyanobacteria (blue‑algae). The health offices of Landkreis Waldeck‑Frankenberg (Edersee – Rehbach), the Silbersee region, and the Bodensee authority in Lindau warn that contact with contaminated water can cause skin irritation, gastrointestinal upset and respiratory problems, particularly for children and pets. Swimming is discouraged in affected areas until water quality improves.

Authorities recommend limiting time outdoors during peak heat, drinking plenty of fluids, wearing hats, long‑sleeved clothing, and promptly showering after any water contact.
