Heat wave intensifies across United States during Labor Day weekend

An intense late-summer heat wave is impacting the central and southern United States during the Labor Day weekend. The National Weather Service predicts unrelenting heat across the central and southern plains, extending into the Mississippi Valley. Temperatures are expected to reach the 90s and low 100s, with high humidity exacerbating conditions. In regions like Nebraska, heat advisories are in effect, and while scattered storms may provide some relief, temperatures are expected to remain well above seasonal averages until a cold front arrives midweek.

In New York City, recent extreme heat has highlighted significant economic and health inequalities. Climate and public health advocates, including representatives from We Act for Environmental Justice, have identified extreme heat as the city’s deadliest climate threat. The heat disproportionately affects marginalized communities by increasing utility costs and straining individuals with pre-existing conditions such as asthma, diabetes, and heart disease. Last year, heat-related issues resulted in 341 hospitalizations and 19 deaths related to heat stress.
