Heat wave precautions and hydration advice issued in Spain

As heat waves impact the region, the Alcorcón City Council has issued a call for community solidarity to protect vulnerable residents. The campaign emphasizes checking on elderly individuals living alone, children, pregnant women, and those with chronic illnesses.

Health recommendations include staying hydrated, wearing light clothing, avoiding sun exposure during peak hours, and staying in cooled environments. Residents are advised to recognize symptoms of heatstroke, such as dizziness, headache, confusion, or high body temperature, and to seek medical assistance immediately if they occur.

Regarding hydration, medical specialist David Callejo warns that consuming ice-cold water during extreme heat can be counterproductive. He explains that the body reacts to sudden internal temperature drops by activating metabolic processes to generate heat, which may ultimately increase the sensation of warmth. Instead, he suggests drinking cool liquids to facilitate natural thermoregulation through sweating.
