Heat wave pushes forward grape and pear harvests in Spain

Record high temperatures have accelerated the start of the grape harvest in the Balearic Islands. In Ibiza and Formentera the campaign began in late July, while in Mallorca the Institute of Research and Training in Agro-Food and Fisheries (IRFAP) started collecting varieties such as Grec, Llora, Morsecà, Coanegra and Argamussa. Technicians are monitoring acidity and potential alcohol to optimise quality, and early indicators point to a larger‑than‑average, high‑quality vintage.

The same heat has moved forward the pear "blanquilla" harvest in Lleida. Farmer Joan Blanch reports a roughly 10% drop in expected yield – about 25,000 kg – but notes that the fruit’s size and quality remain excellent, with prices around €0.80 per kilogram. The regional agriculture department projects a total 5,480 tonnes for the season, an 8% decline from the previous year, while export demand to Israel continues to wane.
