France and Spain wildfires trigger mass evacuations across Mediterranean
A fourth heat wave is sweeping western Europe, with Spain’s temperatures projected to reach 45 °C and southwestern France around 38 °C. The extreme heat has intensified forest fires that have already forced the evacuation of more than 300,000 people in France and Spain, prompting health authorities to warn of severe air‑quality impacts from fine‑particle smoke, carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide.
French officials ordered an additional evacuation of 4,000 residents on 28 July, while the Gironde region battles a blaze four times the size of Paris. Over 2,200 firefighters and more than 20 aircraft, supported by European partners, are deployed to contain the fire, with volunteers and locals helping to protect vulnerable zones.
Parallel wildfire outbreaks are occurring in North Africa. In Algeria, roughly 1,550 fire spots were recorded over 12 days, resulting in at least six deaths, dozens of injuries and damage to about 150 homes. Tunisia has seen more than 600 fires that have consumed over 240 ha of forest, and Morocco’s Taroudant region is confronting severe fire activity as well. The combined crises underscore the growing climate‑driven fire risk across the Mediterranean basin.
