Heat waves drive Americans to move outdoor gatherings indoors

A survey of 1,000 U.S. adults by The Luxury Pergola reveals that extreme weather is significantly impacting social habits. Approximately 71.2% of hosts reported skipping or canceling outdoor gatherings due to heat waves in the past year. This trend is particularly pronounced among Gen Z, where the figure rises to 80%.

As the U.S. Surgeon General, Dr. Vivek Murthy, has previously identified loneliness as a national epidemic, the shift from outdoor to indoor socializing presents a challenge to in-person connection. The data shows that 52.8% of respondents move gatherings indoors immediately when weather conditions change, a figure that reaches 88.2% among households earning $250,000 or more.

Key environmental deterrents include humidity, direct sun, and insects. To combat these issues, respondents identified several desired improvements for outdoor spaces, including covered areas to stay dry, shade, bug control, and cooling solutions. Additionally, 62% of participants noted that providing cold drinks and ice is the most effective way to keep guests outside during heat.
