Southern California braces for major heat wave and triple-digit temperatures

A major heat wave is expected to impact much of Southern California, with the National Weather Service issuing extreme heat watches for several regions including Orange County, Riverside, and Santa Barbara counties.

Forecasters predict a large dome of high pressure will bring triple-digit temperatures to inland valleys and deserts. In the Riverside metropolitan area and Coachella Valley, highs could reach or exceed 100 degrees. Los Angeles County valleys may see temperatures between 100 and 110 degrees, while coastal areas could reach the 90s. Santa Barbara County is also bracing for a long-duration heat event that could see temperatures up to 100 degrees in the mountains and Cuyama Valley.

In addition to the heat, officials warn of increased wildfire risks due to hot, dry conditions and potential offshore wind gusts of 20 to 30 mph. Some areas, such as Moreno Valley, have been notified of possible public safety power shut-offs by utility providers to mitigate wildfire danger. Overnight temperatures will also remain elevated, staying in the 70s for many coastal and valley locations.
