Heat waves in Andalusia linked to 430 deaths

Extreme heat waves driven by climate change are showing increased intensity, duration, frequency, and geographic reach. In Andalusia, Spain, research from Universidad Carlos III attributes 430 deaths to heat between mid-May and mid-August, with 40% of these fatalities concentrated in Seville and Malaga.

The phenomenon disproportionately affects the elderly and residents of impoverished areas. While air conditioning offers relief, its use can contribute to the urban heat island effect by expelling hot air and consuming significant energy. Additionally, rising water temperatures in pools and the sea are facilitating the spread of viruses, bacteria, and fungi, leading to swimming bans in parts of the Malaga coast.
