Heather Watson leads British players in US Open qualifying

Several British players progressed through the opening rounds of the US Open qualifying in New York. Heather Watson defeated sixth seed Claire Liu 4-6 6-2 6-4 to remain in contention for her first main-draw appearance at the tournament in five years. She is scheduled to face Spain's Angela Fita Boluda next.

In the men's qualifying, Toby Samuel, Jacob Fearnley, Billy Harris, and Harry Wendelken all secured victories to move forward. Samuel defeated Francesco Maestrelli, while Harris beat Gonzalo Bueno. Fearnley overcame Roberto Carballes Baena, and Wendelken defeated Stefano Travaglia. However, Liam Broady and Felix Gill were eliminated from the competition.

In other notable results, China's Zheng Qinwen defeated compatriot Xiaodi You 6-3 6-2 to advance to a match against Clara Burel. Meanwhile, Brazilian player Joao Fonseca announced his withdrawal from the tournament due to an abdominal injury.
