Heathrow Airport third runway delayed until 2039

Heathrow Airport has announced that the construction of its planned third runway will likely be delayed by four years, pushing the expected operational date to 2039. Airport executives informed the UK government that the previous 2035 deadline, established by former Chancellor Rachel Reeves, is no longer achievable due to planning and regulatory bottlenecks.

The airport aims to secure planning permission by 2029 and intends to complete the runway within a decade of that approval. The expansion project, estimated to cost £49 billion, is expected to create between 100,000 and 108,000 new jobs and significantly boost the UK economy. The project also involves major infrastructure changes, including rerouting a section of the M25 motorway through a tunnel under the new runway.

Political support for the project has become a point of contention. While the previous administration supported the expansion as an economic driver, Prime Minister Andy Burnham has expressed hesitation, stating that the matter should primarily involve the voices of London residents. Local groups and London Mayor Sadiq Khan have also raised concerns regarding noise pollution, air quality, and environmental impacts.
