Heathrow expansion threatens England’s largest medieval barn

Campaigners are warning that the proposed expansion of Heathrow Airport could threaten the survival of England’s largest surviving medieval timber-framed barn. The New Barn at Harmondsworth, constructed in 1426, is considered a significant architectural landmark due to its scale and the fact that over 95% of its structural oak timbers remain original.

Justine Bayley, a former archaeological scientist for English Heritage, noted that the barn sits only a few hundred metres from the boundary of the proposed airport extension. There are concerns that vibrations from aircraft take-offs could “shake to pieces” the 600-year-old structure. The public has until 1 September to submit objections regarding the expansion and its impact on the site.
