Heating appliance safety: Preventing burns during winter
As temperatures drop, the risk of domestic accidents involving heating appliances increases. Common hazards include electric heaters, radiators, and gas equipment, which can cause severe burns if handled improperly.
To prevent accidents, experts recommend maintaining at least one meter of distance between heat sources and combustible materials like curtains or furniture. It is also advised not to dry clothing on heaters, as this can cause fires or burns when attempting to retrieve the items. Supervision of children and pets is critical, as is ensuring all devices are turned off when unattended.
In the event of a burn, the recommended immediate action is to place the affected area under a stream of cool (not freezing) water for 10 to 15 minutes to limit skin damage.
