Heating costs drive energy research and relief proposals

Researchers at the Université Catholique de Louvain in Belgium have conducted a three-year study titled ‘Slowheat’ to explore ways to reduce gas consumption. The experiment involved 23 households in Brussels, where participants lowered their average indoor temperature from 19 degrees Celsius to approximately 15 degrees Celsius. Instead of heating entire buildings, the focus shifted to heating individuals through physiological adaptation and specialized clothing, such as layered functional sportswear.

The results varied by household; one subgroup reduced heating energy consumption by nearly 50 percent without an increase in electricity use, while another household in a terraced house reduced consumption by 96 percent.

In Germany, the Saarland state government, led by the SPD, has proposed federal relief for citizens facing high heating costs. With heating oil prices rising by 75 percent compared to the previous year, Minister Petra Berg has advocated for state compensation payments to support low-income households that rely on oil heating. It remains uncertain whether these proposed relief measures will be implemented.
