Poland energy market: Solar power surges as coal prices and imports rise

Poland is experiencing significant shifts in its energy landscape. Solar energy production has seen rapid growth, with photovoltaics accounting for up to 23 percent of the country's electricity production in June 2026. To support this transition, energy storage initiatives are being implemented in regions like Konecki County to improve grid stability and efficiency.

Conversely, the coal market is facing volatility ahead of the heating season. Coal imports to Poland rose by 168 percent in the first half of 2026, with major supplies coming from Kazakhstan and Colombia. Prices for domestic heating coal have increased, with some retailers reporting rises of up to 22 percent, pushing costs for certain types above 2,000 PLN per ton.

Heating costs for households vary widely depending on the source. While air-source heat pumps remain the cheapest option at approximately 18 groszy per kWh, the high cost of installation and electricity remains a factor. In contrast, heating with fuel oil is currently the most expensive method, costing around 77 groszy per kWh. Pellet prices have also risen significantly, exceeding 2,000 PLN per ton, making it a less competitive alternative than in previous years.
